10 min readDuring an interview with Celeb Mode Amrish Puri’s Grandson, Vardhan Puri revealed his struggles for getting a film Yeh Saali Aashiqui.
“My grandfather Amrish Puri passed away when I was busy doing theatre, so I was a theatre artist, from the age of five till 15. I never used to go on a film set, I used to go and meet him in his van because he never allowed me on the set. The idea was whole that when 1 or 2 times I went on set, I really got so pampered and Dadu felt like then I will start feeling entitled and special as compared others my age people which was a little negative which was not do me well so he bans me from sets. I was not having so much interaction with the film industry, I only know some people who used to come to my home and they were close to Dadu. After my grandfather passed away our connection with the film industry got cut completely because my father is a businessman, I was in theatre and my mother is a doctor so of course there was no one to make calls for me, it has no connection with the film industry. I was just doing theatre organically, in theatre I have got my first lead role 1st in the age of 14 years, before that I used to do small role while doing that I understood that I am born to entertain, even if any wedding used to be there at my house I used to entertain people, or it used to be friends get-together I used to just needed an audience whether I m doing dance, mimics or I m doing acting. I just want people to talk and then my family and I realized that I have already done the theatre and film industry is also a place which is very exciting and I always had a passion that I should be a film actor and theatre actor also. That’s what I realized at the age of 20, on my 20th birthday I realized that I should gift to myself an AD’s job at Yash Raj film”.
He Further added “My grandfather and Yash Ji were very close, even Aditya sir and my grandfather were very close but because since from so many years we have not spoken, I was little Hesitate whether I should go and talk with him or no because after so many years talking with someone you feel strange, then I called Ashish Singh he was the executive producers of YashRaj, so somehow I managed to get Yash Raj, landline number, I used to continuously call them, sometimes guard, security used to pick up my call and every time I used to tell them I want to meet Ashish sir, after few weeks finally I got to talk with Ashish sir and I told him my name is Vardhan and I am a theatre artist give me a chance I want to become AD, I gave my interview but he said I don’t take this calls, these calls have been taken by Aditya sir or head of the production, I said okay allow my to meet Aditya sir, but they said he is very busy, but I was so persistent that I think from 6 to 7th months I have troubled them a lot and it doesn’t matter like you are from Puri family so what you have to learn work, film industry is a very fair place, there are talks like nepotism but people get what they deserve, finally I meet Aditiya sir and I total him I am Amrish Puri, the grandson, and he said your grandfather is my favourite actor and most favourite human beings but that doesn’t mean anything and doesn’t mean I will take you because he was different and you are different, I can do only one thing for you, I will make you meet 4 or 5 directors, if they want to take you they can take otherwise I can’t do anything”.
“The 1st director I met was Habib Faisal he asked me 10 Questions technical one’s long cut means, jumpcut means and I was not knowing a single answer and then I said sorry sir I should go he said you are hired, and I said sir I don’t know anything then he said you should have 100% knowledge or 0% because you will be blank slate I can write what I want to write, if you have came with 50% knowledge I would have not taken you that’s how I got my 1st job, then I did 2 films with yashRaj from writing to release while doing that I got many feedback that he is an actor, he should be an actor, then I have given many auditions from 21 to 26 almost around 1200 and it was a world record that nobody must have given this much audition, I used to go 3 times a day for audition, Mukesh Chhabra ke office, Vicky Sidana office, Shanoo Sharma Mam office, I just used to sit outside their office. I used to feel why I have to give so much audition, I started thinking I have to learn more or I have to do some other job, then I remembered that my grandfather got his 1st debut at the age of 41 and he was struggling from the age 20, he was also a theatre actor, his journey and my journey is like same, but got a chance in less time because of his blessing, he has struggled 21years, and I struggled only 8 years”.
