Toy Story 4 Review: A Great That Lack The Original Magic

4 min read

After Toy Story 3 Disney Pixar has taken quite a hit on originals and has mostly banked on its safely tuned sequels. The production did saw hit few high notes with Up and Coco but on the bigger picture, the creativity seems to be dyeing at the Pixar. With that being said the risk taken on the new director Josh Cooley is quite admirable. Josh is making his debut with this his first feature-length film.

The film starts with a flashback to brief us on the absence of Bo Peep and Andy donating his toys to Bonnie and then you are whisked back to the present. Toys are enjoying their new life except Woody (Tom Hanks) probably because he is not the favourite toy of Bonnie like he used to be for Andy. However, his existential crises come to a halt when he meets Forky – a plastic spork with googly -eyes and pipe-cleaner arms who has his own identity crises. Forky believes that he belongs to garbage and Woody is hell-bend on making forky understand his higher calling.

Tough the Keanu Revie’s stuntman duke Caboom stole the spotlight, the one who actually deserves attention is Forky who has been thrown a new life with new set of rules which not prepared for at all. The movie full of hilarious moments which makes up for the script which fails to live up to the Pixar standard.  However the movie is not that bad their still some beautifully crafted moments like creepy zombieish dummy to the Benson who adds the dash of horror, while the growing relationship of Woody and Forky which will make you go awwww, despite that the emotional punches feel lighter compare to the furnace scene, Buzz’s downfall and Jessies Back story.

The movie breaks away from its tradition and instead of focusing on old cast it turns the camera to the new ones. The reason that could be behind continuing a story that looked like it ended in part 3 was maybe the toys had more to learn, more to teach.
