Tribute to Bach composed by Dr. L. Subramaniam features the iconic Anne-Sophie Mutter
8 min readThe Lakshminarayana Global Music Festival (LGMF) is happy to announce a special project: Dr. L Subramaniam’s composition titled ‘Tribute to Bach’ that he will perform with the iconic European violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter. This is the first ever East-West collaboration of Ms. Mutter. LGMF was started thirty years ago by Dr. L. Subramaniam and Viji Subramaniam in the memory of Dr. Subramaniam’s late father and guru Prof. V. Lakshminarayana, a torchbearer of new violin techniques and the visionary responsible for taking the Indian violin to the global stage. He was also an educator and taught at Jaffna College as a visiting faculty for music. He composed several songs and organized many concerts in India and Sri Lanka to promote South Indian vocal and instrumental music. The LGMF has presented major global music concerts across five continents. With a vision to bring global peace and harmony through music Dr. Subramaniam has successfully presented hundreds of great musicians from various corners of the globe in the past three decades. The festival’s 30th year celebrations began in January 2021 with a global premiere of Dr. Subramaniam’s Jupiter Symphony performed by the European Recording Orchestra. The other artistes featured in the festival were John McLaughlin, Kavita Krishnamurti, Pankaj Udhas, Anup Jalota, Usha Uthup, Ilaiyaraaja, Oystein Baadsvik, Svetlana Smolina and so on. He registered as a medical doctor before he decided to completely dedicate his life to music. He obtained a master’s degree in Western Classical music and composition. In addition to being awarded with many honorary doctorates for his contribution in the field of music, he has holds a Ph.D. for his research in the field of Raga and Harmony. He is also the founder/director of the Lakshminarayana Global Music Festival (LGMF), the biggest global music festival in India, and the Subramaniam Academy of Performing Arts (SaPa), a premier institute for musical education. He is also the founder/chairman of the Lakshminarayana Global Centre of Excellence (LGCE) with his wife Kavita Krishnamurti Subramaniam. For more than forty years the virtuoso has now been a fixture in all the world’s major concert halls, making her mark on the classical music scene as a soloist, mentor and visionary. The four-time Grammy Award winner is equally committed to the performance of traditional composers as to the future of music. So far, she has given world premieres of twenty-eight works. Commemorating the forty-year stage anniversary of the charismatic artist, Deutsche Grammophon assembled the double CD Mutterissimo – The Art of Anne-Sophie Mutter, released in 2016. In the autumn of 1997 she founded the “Association of Friends of the Anne Sophie Mutter Foundation e.V.” to which the Anne-Sophie Mutter Foundation was added in 2008. These two charitable institutions provide support for the scholarship recipients, support which is tailored to the fellows’ individual needs. Since 2011, Anne-Sophie Mutter has regularly shared the spotlight on stage with her ensemble of fellows, “Mutter’s Virtuosi”.
